3 Hot Trends in Internet Marketing and How To Take Advantage of Them Right Now

Local Search

  • The Internet (and smartphones) are where people are searching for local businesses!
  • Google 7-Pack – map and listing of 7 local businesses shown at top of search engine pages for locally focused searches – most valuable piece of real estate in local search right now
  • Tips for optimizing your listing in the 7-Pack (most of which are free)

1.   Claim your business listing on Google Maps, Yahoo! Local, and Bing Local (may also want to claim them on Yelp and MerchantCircle) and fill out listing as completely as possible

2.   Category selection very important

  • Have to select at least one of Google’s preset categories
  • Have 4 more you can customize
    • Do keyword research using Google Adwords Keyword Tool
      • Difference in traffic between words such as “real estate agent” and “realtor” could be 100s or 1000s a month
      • Add top traffic keywords related to your business as categories

3.  Get positive, 5 star reviews

  • Come up with a plan to encourage customers to post reviews for your business
  • Google pulls reviews from other sites – look at your competitors’ local business listings to see what sites they are getting reviews from
  • Don’t get too many reviews too quickly – if possible, average 1/week and spread them out to the various review sites

4.  Citations

  • These are a mention of your business name + address and/or phone number on other websites
  • Research competitors to see what sites they are listed on (in the “More about this place” section of their business listing) and try to get your business listed there too
  • Get listed in local business directories and industry directories
  • Sign up with Universal Business Listings for $30/yr to have your business information posted to 60+ data sources

Video Marketing

  • Video playing a big role in selling products and services because it’s proving more effective than traditional sales letters
  • Generally much easier to get videos ranked on first page of Google than it is to get regular web pages ranked there
  • SEO Tips for video:

1.   Do keyword research and find 1 keyword to focus on

2.   Put keyword in title of video and description

3.   Add keyword as a tag along with 10 – 15 or so other related keywords

4.   Get backlinks to the video from other sites (use keyword as anchor text, when possible)

  • Can create backlinks on WordPress.com, Blogger.com, Squidoo, HubPages, Scribd, StumbleUpon, Digg, Mixx, Reddit, etc.

5.  Look into Traffic Geyser and Tube Mogul if you plan to do a lot of video marketing

  • Sites will automatically submit your video to multiple video sharing sites
  • Paid sites, but worth it if you do a lot of video marketing

Facebook PPC

  • Amazing demographic targeting capabilities
  • Target prospects by age, gender, birthdate, hometown, relationship status, hobby, favorite book/movie/music/tv show, etc.
  • Combine different demographic information to really laser focus on prospects
  • Competition, at least for now, is fairly low which means costs per click are generally low
  • Low risk opportunity for now
  • Don’t take people directly to a sales page
  • Split test and measure your results!!
