Is Your Business Like The Cardinals or Cubs?

With Cardinal’s opening day just a mere 3 weeks away, I haven’t been this excited for a Redbird’s team really since 2005.  It seems as if the Cardinals ownership group and John Mozeliak have once again focused on strategically building a well-rounded team of great players but just as importantly, good people. Not only have they been bringing in good chemistry guys, they are brining players in that complement the style of baseball that the Cardinals play.  Right now you may be asking what exactly does any of this have to do with business?

Well, often times we are so caught up in the day to day operations of our business, that we are unable to step back and take an objective look at what is working and what is not working.  Can you imagine what the Cardinals would look like if they didn’t take each off-season to evaluate each player and their role within the structure of the team?  What if they didn’t look at the holes on their roster and find effective ways to fill them?  Or if Tony didn’t utilize the strengths of our top performers in the style of baseball the team played?  Well, yeah, I guess it is pretty easy to imagine it, we’d just have to look four hours north at the Chicago Cubs.

In business, we don’t necessarily have an off-season providing a predetermined re-evaluation period for our business every year, so we must consciously make an effort to do so.  It might be that you schedule the assessment at the end of each calendar/fiscal year or maybe you have a seasonal business that leaves a slower time of the year that would make more sense.  Either way, it is important for you to take time each year to make sure your actions are in alignment with your strategy, that your strategic objectives are still relevant, all of your employees are in the right places and still are a fit for your team, and that you aren’t over looking any potential opportunities in the market place.

If you sit down and take a hard look at where you are and where you want to go at least once a year, with some occasional check points in between (like the trade deadline) then you and your business will be much better off.  It will really make a big difference in your orgaization…you know kinda like the difference between being the second most decorated franchise in baseball history and not winning a World Series for 100+ years…but then again, who’s counting?  Go Cards!
